A large-scale resort development including a casino, mega-yacht marina, and vacation residences has been proposed for Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera .
The community has not been formally consulted. We are calling on our elected representatives and relevant ministers to act.
We are calling on the government to:
Ensure that any development in Governor's Harbour is proportionate to the scale, character, and infrastructure realities of a Family Island community.
Oppose any approvals for components that would fundamentally and irreversibly alter the character of Governor's Harbour, including a casino and a mega-scale resort footprint.
Release full public details of all plans, agreements, and approvals related to the proposed J Resort development, including any Bahamas Investment Authority approvals already granted.
Establish a formal, structured community consultation process with enforceable weight before any further approvals are granted.
Why We Object:
-
A casino operation fundamentally and permanently changes what Eleuthera is as a destination. It attracts a different market, introduces different social pressures, and signals a shift in identity from Family Island to gaming destination. The social costs fall on the community. The profits flow elsewhere.
-
A development of this stated size, in and around a historic town whose infrastructure already struggles to meet existing demand, is disproportionate and unsustainable. It would require hundreds of imported workers, strain roads, water, and electricity, drive up housing costs, and permanently alter the character and density of the community.
-
Approvals may already have been granted. The community has not been told what has been agreed, what land is involved, whether Crown Land is part of the footprint, or what the developer has committed to in return. This is unacceptable for a project of this stated scale.
-
Large-scale developments across The Bahamas have a documented history of restricting access in practice. Any agreement with this developer or any developer must include binding, enforceable public access commitments, not assurances.
-
A development spanning from coast to coast, with a marina, large-scale construction, and resort infrastructure, poses serious risks to the coastal ecosystems, marine environment, and freshwater resources of Central Eleuthera. A full, independent Environmental Impact Assessment must be completed and made publicly accessible before any further approvals are granted.
